Maluhia - peace, quiet, serenity.

The Hawaii No’ono’o series is a contemporary approach to and reflection of the enchantment and culture of the artists Hawaii island home. Explored in watercolor and paper cut, it is inspired by black and white photographs/old photographs of Polynesian women, and their unique impression.

“When painting I use the primary watercolors, magenta, primary yellow and cyan with black and white. This way I can blend the color I envision, and create the unique color story I feel the image deserves.”

I create dimension by negative space, and then more dimension by layering painted watercolor paper on top. The smooth brush strokes and the softness of watercolor, mixed with cut paper, creates contrast.
